Abstract:
The Laboratory of Geology belongs to the Section of Geological Sciences that is one of the 3 Sections forming the School of Mining and Metallourgical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens. In particular, the Laboratory of Geology deals with subjects of general geology geomorphology, related to morphological changes of the landscape, sedimentology marine and coastal geology, related to the coastal processes (sediment transportation and sedimentation. The activities have also included coastal geomorphology, seabed sedimentology, coastal oceanography sediment pollution and aspects concerning the management of the environment of the coastal zone. The scientific staff of the Laboratory has written several scientific papers regarding near shore processes, sea level changes, mineralogy and geochemistry of sediments in several gulfs and beaches as well as structure and morphology of the sea bed (e.g. Thermaikos gulf, Strymonikos, Gulf, Amvrakikos Gulf, Ierissos gulf etc.). It has also participated in several projects for coastal development and management, as well as marine studies for specific problems such as, pollution from industrial waste disposal, and the stability of the coastline in enclosed gulfs and coastal areas. The Laboratory of Geology has the appropriate infrastructure, both in terms of equipment and software successfully to carry out research related to the coastal zone.
