Abstract: |
The main research topic of NR-P during the last 5 years has been the benthic marine nitrogen cycle, i.e. the microbiology and response of the processes nitrification, denitrification, anammox and nitrate ammonification to biological, physical and chemical parameters in sediments. State of the art microsensor techniques (e.g. biosensors for NO3- and NO2-, oxygen and sulphide and pH microsensor), stable isotopes (15N), and molecular techniques have been applied in combination to study a) interactions between benthic micro algae and N-cycle bacteria in estuarine sediments b) the diversity, spatial and seasonal variations in abundance and activity of bacteria responsible for the unique anaerobic oxidation of ammonium (Anammox) in natural sediments and c) the biology of large filamentous nitrate accumulating sulphur bacteria. Recently the research has been focused on the role of benthic foraminifers in the nitrogen cycle. This has led to the discovery of eukaryotic cells capable for denitrification. The work has been carried out in both artic and temperate environments. |
