Abstract
BALTDER operates as a part of the Institute of Oceanography, University of Gdańsk and on the basis of the already established contacts with other European research centres. The main emphasis of the Centre is placed on the research of the actual state and biological, chemical and physical processes proceeding in the ecosystem of the Baltic Sea, particularly sustainable development of its coastal zone. The main objectives of the Centre include:

  1. Sustainable use of the Baltic resources and developing management strategies for the sea, particularly its coastal zone,
  2. Dissemination of knowledge and data on the functioning of the Baltic ecosystem and opening of new opportunities for further cooperation,
  3. Development of BALTDER as a nationally and internationally recognized research and education centre,
  4. Rise in the standards of research and education in the area of marine sciences and improvement of compatibility of the Centre with different EU scientific institutes,
  5. Increase of intellectual potential and education of a new generation of scientists capable of functioning effectively in modern society,
  6. Transfer of scientific knowledge to management and help to react better to socio-economic needs of the region.

The main activities of the Centre, leading to the achievement of the objectives, are:

  1. Networking and twinning arrangements with other scientific institutes which focus on sea research,
  2. Better integration with the European Research Area in the area of marine sciences through the exchange of scientists and students, organization of conferences, seminars, workshops and lectures on crucial problems of the Baltic ecosystem,
  3. Interdisciplinary research on the functioning of the South Baltic ecosystem, particularly its coastal zone, elaboration of standard up-to-date methods in sampling and analysis of different elements of the marine and coastal ecosystems,
  4. Establishing close links with the Baltic States to carry out the integrated research on the Baltic ecosystem,
  5. Stimulation and development of education in marine sciences at undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD levels, reorientation of research and educational programmes towards new priorities, in line with the EU standards,
  6. Establishing of the Marine Research Network engaged in marine sciences,
  7. Dissemination of marine sciences in East and Central Europe and increase of public awareness on marine environment issues.
