This onshore water transport is compensated by offshore directed rip currents along the breakwater extremities. Different circulation patterns can arise behind the breakwater, as shown in Fig. 10 for shore-normal incident waves. Unlike emergent breakwaters, submerged breakwaters can result in shoreline erosion as well as shoreline accretion in their lee. A 2-cell circulation will induce beach erosion behind the breakwater, while a 4-cell circulation will induce beach accretion. The type of circulation pattern that will arise depends on several parameters, in particular the water depth <math>h_B</math> at which the breakwater is situated. A 2-cell circulation is favored if the water depth <math>h_B</math> is small (magnitude similar to the significant wave height, i.e. within the surf zone <math>x^* <1</math>) and a 4-cell circulation if the water depth <math>h_B</math> is large (compared to the significant wave height, i.e. outside the surf zone). Other parameters influencing the circulation pattern are the [[freeboard]], the breakwater length <math>L_B</math>, and the slope of the equilibrium profile. Small values of these parameters favor 4-cell circulation and large values 2-cell circulation<ref>Ranasinghe, R., Larson, M. and Savioli, J. 2010. The top layer is the most important component, typically composed of arranged elements made of natural stone or concrete. These elements can be broadly classified as blocks or columns. While blocks are rectangular and tightly arranged, columns are irregular. The open spaces between the columns are typically filled with joint filling to enhance clamping. Also, in accordance with their name, columns generally have a larger height-over-width ratio than blocks, which is beneficial for their stability (Fig. 3).  </ins></div></td></tr>

The major failing mechanisms are deformation and wash-out of joint filling. Deformation occurs when the filter material migrates down the slope, causing variations in the filter layer thickness. This can occur when the wave impact lifts the columns (slightly) from the filter layer. Washed-out of the joint filling can be caused by repeated wave loading that washes out the granular material between the columns. This reduction in joint filling negatively affects clamping of the columns which can be lifted more easily from the filter layer. The complete removal of a column has a limited immediate effect on the hydraulic stability if there is no other (structural) damage. <ref>van der Vegt, N., Klerk, W.J., Peters, D.J., van Gent, M.R.A. and Hofland, B. 2024. On mild slopes (<math>\cot \alpha > 6</math>), displaced rocks more often remain present in the wave attack zone, which increases the strength. This leads to an overdesigned structure when existing formulae for steep rock-armored slopes are used. On mildly sloping structures, especially in cases where these structures have a shallow foreshore, spilling waves will more frequently occur than plunging waves. Compared to steeper sloping structures, mildly sloping structures therefore show a wider part of the armor layer being affected by erosion and accretion. Accretion occurs at lower levels on the slope (reaching lower levels than two significant wave heights below the still water level) than for steeper slopes. Also, stones move both up and down, and more often remain in the wave attack section after displacement. This means that the same damage area corresponds to a smaller erosion depth for mild sloping structures compared to steep sloping structures<ref name=J24/>. It also means that the erosion depth is less slope dependent than the damage area.</ins></div></td></tr>
