Definition of Integrated Maritime Spatial Planning:
Various terms have been used to refer to spatial planning in coastal areas and in the sea. The term Integrated Maritime Spatial Planning (IMSP) was first used in the 2007 EU Blue Book on Maritime Policy, where it describes a spatial planning approach which equally covers on- and offshore areas. Maritime spatial planning is considered both a tool and a requirement: A tool to help resolve conflicts of use on coasts and seas and deliver an overall integrated management approach, and a requirement for the continued sustainable development of maritime economic activities and neutral arbiter between conflicting and competing interests and activities.
