Definition of Barcelona Convention:
The "Barcelona Convention" is a regional convention to prevent and abate pollution from ships, aircraft and land-based sources in the Mediterranean Sea. This includes, but is not limited to, dumping, run-off and discharges.
The Convention (Convention for the Protection Of The Mediterranean Sea Against Pollution) was originally signed on the 16th February 1976 and came into force on the 12th February 1978. It was revised in Barcelona, Spain, on 10 June 1995 as the (Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean). It is a regional convention of the United Nations Environment Programme.
