What is the ISECA project?

ISECA (Information System on the Eutrophication of our Coastal Areas) is an European Interreg 2Seas project in which a group of experts bordering the English Channel and the Southern Bight of the North Sea work together on the phenomenon eutrophication. Monitoring of water quality and the detection of eutrophication in coastal waters can be improved using both in-situ and satellite measurements. ISECA refines this monitoring but also investigates how combined models can be used to predict algal blooms. ISECA wants to inform on eutrophication and initiate forecasting so control authorities, policy makers and the general public can take appropriate actions to reduce eutrophication and its consequences.

Project results

Input for the ISECA project is given by the activities of two important groups: scientists, who use their expertise to refine the observation on water quality by combining Earth Observation (EO) data and in-situ measurements, and the divers public who is invited to share their views, knowledge and perception on water quality and the eutrophication. This all contributes in making the right decision in future to improve water quality in the 2Seas region. Output of the ISECA project is the following:

  1. Deliverables: contains the reports coming out of each project activity. More...
  2. Information Search Tool: a simple search interface which provides detailed contact information on various actors and institutions involved in water quality. More...
  3. Web-based Application Server (short: WAS): dedicated to the demonstration of the combined use of EO data with in-situ measurements. Model simulations based on different scenarios and management options for coastal eutrophication are also included in this online tool (for example: reductions in atmospheric nitrogen input, cattle stock size or the use of fertilizers).   4. Communication: focuses on the dissemination of the project and its activities together with informing the general public on the eutrophication phenomenon. More...
  5. Education: As part of this informing ISECA created educational activities intended for a wider audience (from coast guides to educators, from children to adults,...). More...
