While it is difficult to predict major innovations in life science and their future impact on society, it is clear that developments in life science technologies have been, and will continue to be in the future, one of the key drivers of Marine Biotechnology research. In the 1990s Marine Biotechnology developments were largely the result of the molecular biology revolution. During the last decade, the genomic revolution was clearly the primary driving force. Aside from advances in -omics, the development and optimisation of appropriate bio-engineering tools and the cultivation of microorganisms and the use of marine model organisms need to be stimulated, as they are expected to have a large impact on future progress in Marine Biotechnology. This is also true for the increasing number of full length genome sequences of marine organisms, which needs to be understood and utilized.
