Minamata disease, aka [[methylmercury]] poisoning, was recognized in 1953 among the inhabitants of Minamata Bay in southwestern Kyushu, Japan. It occurred mostly among fishermen and their families.

In all, 2000 people were affected, 43 died and 700 of the survivers were left with severe permanent disabilities. Fishing was banned by 1957, and the epidemic was halted. During the investigations of 1959 it was shown that the sediments contained 200 ppm mercury, bivalves 10-39 ppm ([[dry weight]]), and fish in the bay contained 10-55 ppm (dry weight) of mercury, most of it in the form of methylmercury.<ref name="cl">Clark, R,B., 1999.
