Meer im Fokus is a project for extracurricular education on the coastal and marine ecosystem for pupils from grade 8 to 13 in the German federal states Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

It aims at rising knowledge and awareness in society for the coastal ecosystem and its problems by using the pupils as multipliers.

Education for sustainable development

The project Meer im Fokus is based on the concept of education for sustainable development and has the target to make pupils, teachers, tourists and coastal inhabitants as well as other interested parties more familiar with the sensitive Baltic Sea ecosystem, strengthen their awareness and responsibility.

It focuses on knowledge transfer, to highlight unsustainable development processes, the increase and encouragement of competences and key qualifications, to strengthen ability for participation and the communication between generations.

The self-determined work on the Baltic Sea and its coasts as a spatial unit for economy, nature, social life and culture is central in the project as it empowers the pupils to evaluate coherencies and contradictions between protection and utilization, to recognize processes of sustainable development and to point out approaches. The pupils prepare their results in an understandable way for the common public and distribute them on the internet, in own exhibitions and throughout competitions.

Meer im Fokus was awarded as official project of the “UN-Decade Education for Sustainable Development” and “Deutschland – Land der Ideen”.

Meer im Fokus is financed by Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, BINGO!-Projektförderung Schleswig-Holstein and Klara Samariter-Stiftung.

It is coordinated by EUCC- Die Küstenunion Deutschland e.V.
