The Johannesburg Declaration on Sustainable Development was adopted at the Johannesburg summit of 2002, a follow-up to UNCED.
The Johannesburg Declaration reaffirmed the commitment to Agenda 21.
It adopted an implementation plan which contains a special reference to ocean and coastal management and preservation issues, considered as "essential components of the earth's ecosystems and critical for global good security and the well-being of many economies"
