Job Dronkers March 2025: I have added an appendix introducing some concepts of beach groundwater dynamics. I also added a section "Practical experience with beach drainage' with the results of a recent review of beach drainage experiments and applications. Beach drainage systems can in some cases promote beach accretion, but the beach-raising capacity is insufficient to provide long-term protection against the effects of sea level rise.
